Document

The Document tab allows you to customize how your Smartform is formatted when exported as a PDF. This includes options for page size, layout orientation, margins, headers, footers, and page numbering — giving you full control over the final look of your generated documents.

These settings are ideal when your Smartform is used to produce formal documents such as letters, contracts, or reports.

Layout Setup

Page Size

Choose the output page format.
Default: A4 (210 × 297 mm)

Supported sizes may include:

  • A4
  • A5
  • Letter
  • Legal

Orientation

Choose how the document is laid out:

  • Portrait – Vertical layout (default)
  • Landscape – Horizontal layout

Margins

Define how much white space should surround your content.

Set individual margins (in millimeters):

  • Top
  • Bottom
  • Left
  • Right

Example:
Setting all margins to 10 will create even spacing around your document on all sides.

Headers and Footers

You can insert header and footer content into the PDF using custom sections you build directly in Smartform. These sections can include logos, titles, page numbers, dates, or any other elements you want to appear consistently across your pages.

Header/Footer Types

You can define different headers and footers for specific pages of the PDF:

  • First Page Header – Only shown on the first page
  • First Page Footer – Only shown on the first page
  • Running Header – Shown on all following pages
  • Running Footer – Shown on all following pages

Each option is available via a dropdown menu. Once you’ve created a header or footer section, it will appear in the dropdown for selection.

Creating Headers or Footers

To create a header or footer:

  1. Click the ••• button next to the dropdown
  2. Select Create
  3. You’ll be taken to a design window where you can build a custom layout using Smartform elements

Once saved, your new header/footer becomes selectable in the dropdown list.

💡 Think of headers and footers as independent layout sections that can include any Smartform content. You can reuse them across forms for consistent branding.

Managing Existing Layouts

Each ••• menu also includes:

  • Edit – Reopen the selected header or footer for editing
  • Refresh – Reload the list in case you’ve made changes elsewhere

Example Use

You might create:

  • A first page header with your company logo and form title
  • A running footer that displays Page {{PageNumber}} of {{TotalPages}}

This helps users understand and navigate printed or exported versions of your form more easily.

Page Numbering

To include page numbers in your document, add a Smartform text element and use these variables:

Page {{PageNumber}} of {{TotalPages}}
